December 2021 Resume

Background

I graduated from NC State University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in May 2020. And in Fall 2021 I began my studies at the University of Pennsylvania to attain an M.S.E in Robotics.

My fundamental curiosity has driven me to attain a broad range of experience through higher education. My journey includes travel to China, West Africa, Germany, and across the United States to study advanced coursework, lead technical international development service trips, conduct research, and develop cultural competence through meaningful community involvement. As a Park Scholar, I have continually challenged myself to improve my leadership capabilities and engage heavily in service opportunities. As an engineering student, I sought out knowledge that could augment my undergraduate experience. In addition to rigorous extracurricular involvement, I also engaged in two research projects; studying morphology and flight characteristics of insects during one, and developing a fully-actuated robotic hand for experimental grasping and manipulation tasks during the other. I also pursued advanced coursework in electromechanical design and excelled within the Engineering Entrepreneurs Program at NC State.

In the year following graduation, I earned an co-op position and worked for two rotations at Intuitive Surgical – supporting their Durham operations in a manufacturing engineering capacity. While I do not intend to remain in a manufacturing role, I benefitted enormously from this position as I uncovered how specific engineering design choices can impact manufacturing. Additionally, I gained crucial experience diagnosing and prescribing solutions to non-conformances, authoring manufacturing process instructions, and updating risk traceability documentation. I also investigated a case of supplier variance and led a project to improve cycle time for a manufacturing operation. All these experiences provided insight on how I can operate as an engineer at a robotics company – including the heavily regulated medical device industry.

Now at the University of Pennsylvania in the Robotics MSE program, I am eagerly pursuing knowledge that complements my mechanical engineering background. I am finding myself engrossed by mechatronics and finally exploring topics like computer vision. I am placing heavy emphasis on improving at electrical design and programming while tackling high-level robotics topics like perception, control, kinematics and dynamics, and learning. At the culmination of my program, I aim to be well equipped to work as a design engineer capable of developing cutting-edge robotic systems.

As a lifelong artist, I am also a fiercely creative individual. With respect to engineering, I have a penchant for effective visual communication of complex and multidimensional concepts. Additionally, my creative nature drives me to enjoy and excel in rapid prototyping, product development, industrial design, innovation, and collaborating outside of my discipline. It is also my impetus for wanting to be at the cutting edge of engineering and to study, for instance, the undiscovered application of robotics in other fields. Beyond engineering, I further my self-expression and desire for self improvement by continuing to create meaningful and visually compelling paintings, drawings, and sculptures.

I am passionate about using my technical skills and background to advance humanity and address the grand challenges we face globally. My specific interests include renewable energy, rapid prototyping, manufacturing, biologically-inspired engineering design, product design, international development, medical devices, medical robotics, and entrepreneurship in the tech sector.
